Sometimes when you listen to a professional pianist playing and you hear all these beautiful runs and lush sounding fills, don't you wish that your fingers can also move quickly on the piano? For many years, I've bought all the books that are on the market that teach me how to do tons of runs and improvisational fills. Some of the runs take a long time to practice because of the fingering. I also spent a lot of time memorizing these runs from printed sheet music; but as soon as I stopped practicing them, I couldn't do them again. Sigh! What is memorized is soon forgotten when you don't practice.

The better I play, the more I realize that to do runs and fills in the flow, you must know how to work from the basic simple structure of chords in root position and get easy inversions with simple handshapes and finger tricks. Even when we advance to 4-tone (7^th) or 5-tone (9^th) chords, there are tricks and tips for acquiring lush sounding runs into your fingers without complicating your music theory thinking. Only in this way can we attain a quiet mind to play in the flow. If the mind is not quiet, all runs sound mechanical and stiff with hesitation.
